Racial Inequality of the Pandemic...
An article from the New York Times (NYT) in July of 2020, begins with the headline, The Fullest Look Yet at the Racial Inequity of Coronavirus. I again read the headline yet another time or two while scratching my head in wonderment. Yes, the headline will get your attention. Now, as you've read it a couple of times and pondered the sentence you likely have questions. I know I do.
The current COVID-19 virus belongs to a group of RNA viruses that cause diseases in mammals and birds. In birds and humans, they cause respiratory tract infections which range from mild to lethal. Mild illnesses in humans include some cases of the common cold. The more lethal varieties can cause SARS, MERS, and COVID-19.
So as this current virus is of the family from which we get the common cold, it is now evolved into a selective virus attacking predominantly, according to the NYT, blacks, and Latinos? Well, that makes me feel better knowing that I'm much less likely to be one who comes down with this current virus, according to the NYT and their reasoning.
Another question raised by the article is that of, how and why did the pandemic virus suddenly become a component and ingredient of the wonderful world of identity politics? Have medical conditions been transmogrified into the arena of identity politics? If so, then a new medical portion of the school of identity politics proponents has apparently been created. With the current conventional wisdom, will the proponents of this new genre of identity politics become the experts to whom we will have to listen? If so, what will be the qualifications for these individuals to be classified as experts?
