5 Reasons to oppose H.R. 1

There are many more reasons to oppose this dumpster fire piece of legislation and yet I’ll keep it simple. H.R. 1 is better known by its colloquial name, “For the People Act of 2021”. I’m told by my learned Washington D.C. sources that this is primed to be voted upon very soon.

Let’s look at five reasons that this 791-page bill needs to be defeated.

  • Ballot Harvesting.

  • Duplicate Voting.

  • False Voter Registration.

  • Ineligible Voting.

  • Unconstitutionally requires states to restore the ability of felons to vote.

Ballot Harvesting - Undermines the one person, one vote premise to an extent. Throughout the U.S. the laws on who is allowed to return the voters ballot are incredibly varied.

Duplicate Voting - Yes, we make fun and joke about the dead voting in Chicago. However, there are voters who register in multiple locations and voting in the same election in more than one jurisdiction or state.

False Voter Registration - Voting that either uses a phony name and a real or fake address. Claiming residence in a particular voting precinct where the registered voter does not actually live and is not entitled to vote.

Ineligible Voting - One of the key points and reasons for states to require voter ID. Illegal registration and voting by individuals who are not U.S. citizens, are convicted felons or are otherwise not eligible to vote.

Unconstitutionally requires states to restore the ability of felons to vote - Upon release from prison, every felon would immediately be restored the ability to vote. The 14th Amendment to the Constitution allows states to restrict voting rights to those who have participated in "rebellion, or other crime." States have the constitutional authority to decide when or if to restore that right, as long as they do so in a manner that is not racially discriminatory. H.R. 1 would attempt to unconstitutionally overrule the 14th Amendment with a statute.

While we all have had our confidence shaken to the core with the most recent presidential election, the overall election process is not secure. The potential passage of H.R. 1, does nothing to instill any confidence going forward of election integrity by any stretch of the imagination. Call or write your elected Representatives and Senators and urge them to vote no on H.R. 1.
